Ciclista profesional entre 1958 y 1966, el bearnés nativo había tenido una gran carrera en el circuito. Varias veces bien situado en las especiales (3º en París-Niza y 4º en la Flecha Valona en 1960), también tuvo el honor de vestir el maillot amarillo en el Tour de Francia y ganar varias etapas en el gran bucle.

Fue uno de los primeros en popularizar el papel de miembro del equipo junto al famoso Raymond Poulidor en Mercier. Robert Cazale murió el pasado viernes a la edad de 89 años.
